Esposizione Universale Roma
EUR stems from fascist doctrine, global ambition, and an unhealthy desire to replicate the success of the Roman Empire. But here in Rome we are in the job of learning from rather than canceling our cultural past.

Taking an early morning break from the wiggling of Rome’s historic streets and classic architectural decoration, a sunrise trip to the outskirts finds the rationalism of mid 20c Rome.
The early hour and the rigid planning bring a breath of fresh air.
There is a comfort in the simplicity of untrammelled perspective, in the controlled urban realm and in the clarity of forms that define them.
Released from the need to dodge and dive through the press of people and the low hanging trappings of the city, there is room to define your own views, space to seek out the best angles, time to reflect on the relationships of form and sky.
How different it initially appears to our Roman experience so far. But it shares with the historic city an interest in sculpture more than architecture, the prominence of space over buildings, and a representation of dominance rather than social equality. And the coffee’s not bad either.
